Survivify: Work

How to Survivify: Office Politics

Do you have a toxic work environment? Maybe you have the boss from hell. Either way, sometimes people just don't get along, and there's nothing you can do about it but keep your head down and get through the day. If your work life resembles a cross between a soap opera and a horror movie, this one is for you.

Look on the bright side:

  • If all else fails, you'll at least learn what not to do at your next job.
  • You could have no job at all.
  • You can use your new-found skills to work as a diplomat or lion tamer.
  • You could be working for Darth Vader.

Tips from the trenches:

  • Find a mentor to confide in.
  • Do not - repeat not - drink at office functions. At least, not too much, anyway.
  • Resist the temptation to get involved in other people's conflicts.
  • Bring in an Organizational Development expert to help defuse the situation.
  • Don't send any emails to colleagues that you wouldn't want your boss to see.
